Number 8 jetty situated on the bend in the river from Wisemans Reach into Mixtow reach is a naturally deep berth scoured by the fast flowing river and requiring no dredging. It was naturally the berth used by the biggest and deepest ships and the one closest to the railway distribution. As ships got bigger and cargoes started being exported world wide Great Western Railways who by now owned and operated the jetties at Fowey needed to load ships quicker and more efficiently. Up until this time ships had to be moved up and down the berths to load the cargo through out the vessels holds. This was time consuming and labour intensive. Before the 1st World War it was decided to build a travelling loader fed by conveyor belts with a silo into which trucks could be tipped having been moved by electric capstans instead of horses. The work having commenced was suspended during the war as the Admiralty commandeered the jetties. Work resumed after the war with upgraded designs and was finally completed in September 1923.
